May 5

Whew! Sightseeing and presentations and a little time for sleep. Last night after a day of school and presentations, we met up in "Old Town" Stockholm for a "Ghost Tour" in which we heard the "other" stories.... of executions and diseases and strange hidings in the basements.... It was very entertaining to hear the dark stories of Stockholm as well as travel through narrow streets of the oldest section of Stockholm. To top the evening off, we had a snack at McDonalds.

Today we had several presentations in the morning and then went back into Stockholm for a visit to the Vasa Museum to view a Swedish warship that set sail for its maiden voyage in 1638 to travel only about 20 minutes before she sunk. She was discovered and began restoration in 1961. They found most of her and have put her back together. She is the real thing - not a replica! The Mayflower set sail in 1620 so this boat is about the same time period. Impressive!!! Also makes me realize that we are such a young country compared to Sweden. I know that sounds so obvious but when you see a ship built in 1630 that is ornate and you compare to people first arriving in the US at the same time it is mind boggling.

Tomorrow we go to the Archipelago for a couple of nights - we'll go by train and ferry to one of the 30,000 islands that make up the archipelago. I won't have internet there so don't expect to hear from me for awhile.
